Are you asking yourself the same question that I am . . . "What happened to 2006?" Where did the past 365 days go? And didn't I just dismantle the Christmas tree? Try as I might, my life seems to be stuck on fast forward, and my days seem to always be as busy as the days of December, regardless of what the calendar might say. With all that said, I will vow to myself, and to my family, to slow down in 2007. I will take the time to smell the roses and savor the simple moments in life. Just let me get my Christmas shopping done first! The holidays are upon us, and we have several reasons to get you into the spirit of the season.
One of my favorite childhood memories is of packing the family in my father's old red Jeep to ride through different neighborhoods and look at Christmas lights. From the simple to the extravagant, the lights of Christmas are a treat for both young and old. In this issue, Margaret Lamb explores a neighborhood in Lexington that is sure to delight your entire family. These families succeed in turning their entire neighborhood into a winter wonderland with an extra festive flair.
When I hear the word fruitcake, I can't help but think of a doorstop. It is one of those holiday treats about which I can easily say, "I'll pass!" when offered a slice. However, Susan Slack has discovered a fruitcake that isn't just edible, it is delicious. Learn her secrets to creating a fabulous fruitcake that your friends will demand year after year.
The holidays are as much about giving as anything else, and our children are never too young to start learning the value of giving back to their community. Several kids in the Midlands have participated in worthwhile causes and created projects that have taught them that doing for others is better than any gift they will receive on Christmas morning. Vicki Cannon introduces us to several of these outstanding teens who are well on their way to making an impact on our community.
Our holiday home showcase often creates quite a challenge for us as we try to find a family who is willing to dig out their Christmas decorations, adorn their entire home in lights and greenery and dress in their holiday best in August so that we can get our holiday issue to the printer in time. This year, Wendy and William Robinson agreed to celebrate the season during the hottest week of the summer and managed to blow us away with their zest and creativity. Get to know the Robinson family and see their beautiful home in Blythewood, which is sure to get you in the Christmas spirit.
We hope that you and your family have a safe and happy holiday and that you will try, like me, to slow down and live in the true moment and meaning of the season.
Sincerely,
Emily Tinch
