Spring has sprung … and then some. The pink azaleas, dangling wisteria, dogwood blooms and an ever so slight haze of pollen have turned Columbia into a storybook town. Spring is nature’s gift to us before the hot and humid days of summer, offering an abundance of beauty. Nature gives back to the community, as do countless Midlands residents in so many extraordinary ways. When I think about this issue and the stories we share about those who give, I am reminded of Gandhi’s words, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” Columbia is alive with the changes of spring, and the spirit of change is in the hearts of many citizens.
Sharing their talents with Third World countries, several Midlands doctors are expanding their service and providing medical aid and hope to impoverished citizens across the globe. In her article on page 51, Mary Jane Reynolds writes about these doctors with humble hearts who give their time and talents to promote health and healing to as many people as possible during their time in these poverty-stricken areas.
Many people lend their assistance around the world, including those who serve bravely in our military. However, these service men and women leave families on the home front to serve in other ways. In his article on page 47, Chuck Walsh writes, “ … for each soldier fighting half a world away, there is a parent waiting in concerned silence for a child’s safe return. For every warrior armed for battle, there is a spouse balancing bills and bedtime stories as life goes on until their partner comes home.” Read about several Columbia wives and mothers who serve the home front with a smile, a laugh and a tremendous amount of courage.
As we all know, educating a young person is a “hand up” not a hand out. Once again, we are pleased to be a part of the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia’s Scholarship House to help fund scholarships for children of HBA members. With help from the HBA, these bright students will enjoy their new college homes as much as I hope you enjoy the Tour of Homes in Jacob’s Creek that begins May 5.
And finally, in this issue, we present a special section celebrating the success of Junior Achievement and the South Carolina Business Hall of Fame. Read about the impact that Junior Achievement is making on many of South Carolina’s children through its volunteer efforts and learn more about The South Carolina Business Hall of Fame event that will take place on May 24. To whom much has been given, much is expected, and the successful men and women that will be honored at this year’s banquet have given back in countless ways, always exceeding expectations.
I hope that you are inspired by spring weather and these stories to make changes for the greater good of our community. Opportunities to serve and make a difference are everywhere. The pollen will go away but the chance to make a difference is never ending. Make your mark, make a difference and enjoy this issue of Columbia Metropolitan.
Sincerely,
Emily Tinch
