The 4th Annual Cuts for Cancer event is sponsored by Kenneth Shuler School of Cosmetology and benefits Children's Chance.  Participants will enjoy a variety of services for just $6.00 including haircuts, mini-manicures, and mini-pedicures all to help children with cancer and their families in South Carolina.  Cuts for Cancer will take place on a Sunday and Monday in April (exact date TBD) from 2 p.m. to 5p.m. on Sunday and 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday.  For more information about the event please call (803) 254-5996 or visit www.childrenschance.org and click on events.

Pickin & Piggin at Saluda Shoals Park is a barbeque cook-off and music celebration.  Proceeds from the event will be used to enhance the (K-12) education programs at the Saluda Shoals Parks Environmental Education Center. The event is also aimed at raising awareness of the Foundation's mission to preserve and sustain Saluda Shoals Park. There are few things in the South more universally revered than good barbecue and Pickin' & Piggin' at Saluda Shoals Park will showcase the best barbecue you can find in the Midlands. Food aficionados who appreciate the aroma of roasted meat that has been painstakingly smoked for several hours will want a taste from each of the 20+ teams. Aside from the mouthwatering food, everyone is invited to sit back and enjoy great music. Children will find more than enough to do on the playground, sliding down a huge slid, riding the Saluda Shoals Choo Choo and exploring Saluda Shoals Park.

During the 2008 Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands Rubber Duck Race on the Congaree River, approximately 7,500 Rubber Ducks will be dropped from the Gervais Street Bridge into the Congaree River to compete in the half mile race.  Ducks will be competing to win some fantastic prizes. Come early and enjoy the park & activities provided at West Columbia Riverwalk Amphitheater Park (next to New Orleans Riverfront Restaurant at the Gervais Street Bridge). All proceeds benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands, which operate 20 Clubs and serve over 5,000 children in the Midlands. Ducks sold at all BI-LO and First Citizens Bank locations Pack a lunch and bring your flock for a morning of fun on the banks of the Congaree River! 10:00 AM Family friendly fun activities 10:30 AM Ducks are released. Winning ducks plucked from the river at noon and winners announced.

Riverfest Run/Walk for Epilepsy

Riverfest: Unmasking the Myths Run/Walk for Epilepsy will be held Saturday, April 26 at 8 a.m. originating at Riverfront Park at Laurel and Huger Streets. The event will kick off at 7:50 a.m. with a ½ mile Kids' Fun Run, before the 5K Run/Walk begins at 8:05 a.m.. The 5K route will make a scenic loop over the Congaree River, traversing both the Gervais Street Bridge and the Jarvis Klapman Bridge. On-site registration is from 6:50 a.m.-7:50 a.m.Online registration is preferred, visit www.strictlyrunning.com. Registration is $25 person including a t-shirt. Registrants who do not want t-shirts can reduce the registration fee by $5. Proceeds from the event will help assist the Epilepsy Foundation of South Carolina in providing important services to people with epilepsy.
